ABC is where
learning is focused on learning
the English alphabet in preparation for the next level where
the letter are sounded out and simple words are made and
read. Some parents are able to teach them this by themselves
and this definitely saves the family money.
Phonics is a technical term that relates to
the sound of the letters used in the English alphabet. Here
students learn the different sounds that letters make and
how to make their own words Simple words with up to 4
letters are us learnt in the first step. The next step takes
children to a level where they will be able to read bigger
words. Children who complete the two phases of this course
are able to read and spell basic English words.
Listening is not offered as a separate
course. Unless requested, most classes are rotated from time
to time between teachers so that the students do not get
used to just one English accent. There are many English
accents and we want our students ears to be able to talk to
both American, British or other English speakers.
Conversation is a course. For adults a
course book is followed which will ensure that the lessons
are well balanced in terms of content. It is also very
important that each course materials include all the skills
necessary to ensure competency: Reading, Writing, Speaking,
Listening, Grammar, Vocabulary. For Business people we
select business conversation texts. Children's classes are a
lot of fun. We use a method sometimes referred to as
TPR(Total Physical Response). The classes are active and
children learn through experience. A typical class will have
something short to read. This teaches grammar without making
it a dry subject, and without the child worrying about it.
Then there is the response phase in which the children will
have to respond in an appropriate manner.
TOEFL, TOEIC and
SAT classes are highly specialized, preparing
students to go abroad for business or their education.
Students wishing to take these classes are assessed and a
plan is made together with the student what skills to focus
on.
Returnee classes are for students who
usually have had the privilege to study abroad with native
English speakers. Upon returning parents wish to send them
to a Japanese school, but also would like to keep up their
child's excellent English abilities. Since we have a
complete international school program, these children will
usually follow an English course on the grade level where
they left off in the foreign country. Sometimes, there are
exceptional children who have never been abroad, but who
have been given the gift of the English language and they
too find this course much more fulfilling than regular
children's English classes.
